Cocktail Friesland

For LGBTQIA+ asylum seekers and refugees in Friesland

Everyone deserves a place where they can be themselves, no matter where they come from, what they believe or who they love. For many LGBTQIA+ asylum seekers and refugees, that is not always the reality. There can be fear, uncertainty or a feeling of isolation.

That is why there is Cocktail Friesland: a social group within COC Friesland for LGBTQIA+ people who live in Friesland as asylum seekers and refugees.

Why Cocktail is important

Many LGBTQIA+ asylum seekers and refugees come from countries where it is not safe to be open about who they are. Coming to the Netherlands is the start of a new chapter, but even here support and connection are very important.

Cocktail offers a safe space to rebuild trust, meet new people and, step by step, be yourself again.

What we do

Cocktail offers a safe and welcoming place to meet others, share experiences and have fun together. During our meetings there is space for conversation, relaxation and mutual understanding.

We organise different kinds of activities, such as:

  • shared dinners and game nights
  • themed meetings about, for example, coming out, safety or relationships
  • creative evenings, film nights or small trips in the area
  • meetups with other groups within COC Friesland

Our volunteers create a warm and respectful atmosphere where everyone feels seen. Several languages are often spoken, and we do our best to take everyone's background and situation into account.
